Full time programmer/support
Posted: Tue Dec 28, 2010 02:57 PM

My company is looking for someone to fill a programming and support role.
We specialize in intermodal trucking, drop lots, container storage and repair and we are located in Houston, TX.
We think the person should be more than entry level but not too advanced.
Most of our applications have been converted from Clipper to (x)Harbour. Our biggest application, Intermodal Dispatch System, is being re-written in (x)Harbour and Fivewin.
Does anybody have suggestions on where to look for someone like this? I don't know if anyone just out of school would be interested in Harbour programming.
I have been programming in xBase since dBase II but it seems most people today are looking to other languages for their future.

Gale

I am searching for a xHarbour\FiveWin project that I could help or contribute development. Currently I am in between jobs but have worked in South Carolina State government for almost 18 years and written many FiveWin 'enterprise' applications that more than 5k people use on a daily basis.

I have ventured out of State Government and have been doing freelance work for the past year. I am looking for a project like yours where I could possibly contribute in some form of 'joint venture' perhaps or on a contractural basis. Here are several screen shots of a few applications I have written .. PMO ( project management ) application, Property management, Requisition and purchase order system and a complete Vehicle fleet management system including modules for garage work orders, parts inventory, trips and trip reservations for over 700 vehicles.

I am well versed in dbf\cdx and an ADO SQL expert in managing data from MS SQL Server 2005-8, SQL Express and Oracle 9i.

I would be honored to chat with you and discuss my qualifications and see if we can be of mutial help to each other.

Regards

I agree, you are going to have a hard time finding a young programmer interested in Harbour. It is a dead end for them.

Keep in mind that hiring a more experienced programmer is usually cheaper--not per hour but per job. More experienced programmers can get the job done faster. I have often reduced existing code by 80-90 percent when converting older programs written by less experienced programmers.

I you decide to consider more experienced programmers, I am interested. As you may know, I have been working with xBase since it was invented, and my consulting company was started in 1985. I also have degrees in both science and business.

It would have to be via telecommuting and not full-time. However, you probably wouldn't need me full-time like you would an inexperienced programmer.

James
