Fivewin app on android and iphone
Posted: Mon Apr 25, 2011 06:35 PM
Hi all,
I have a lot of customers that requiring me a solution to use my FWH accounting app also on iPhone and Android.
Unfortunately developing a FWH app for iPhone is expensive and for Android isn't possibile - as I know,
furthermore a vpn connection beetween the mobile phone and the server is also often unstable.

I have found this really interesting solution based on TeamViewer I want to share with you.
- the customer has to install TeamViewer for Windows on the server and the Teamviewer for iPhone/Android on the mobile. TeamViewer can be downloaded from http://www.teamviewer.com and it is totally free for private use.
- the customer connect the mobile to the server. When my accounting app start I ask to the customer if it wants to access in Desktop mode (default) or Mobile mode. Selecting Mobile mode I use a special developed interface optimized for an 800x400 resolution.

This is the result (on Acer liquid with Android).

Marco:

Thanks for sharing that. I am looking for a solution for the same reasons you are. I think having a browse based app or some kind of remote connection to the server is the way to go for the reasons you mentioned, i.e. it is difficult to develop an app for these different platforms (iphone, android, blackberry, smartphone, etc.)

We are already in this situation as we developed an app for Windows Mobile and now the new Mobile 7 doesn't support any apps for any previous versions of Windows Mobile, so we're looking at a total rewrite (which we'd rather not do). Of course the other issue is the differnt platforms. It would be much better if the app would run (or be acccessible) from any device that has internet access instead of forcing the customer to use a specific device/operating system. At the moment it appears TeamView only supports Iphone or Android. I wonder if they will be supporting Smartphones or Blackberry in the future? The other advantage with this approach is data is viewed/updated real time on the server.

One issue we need to resolve is being able to capture a signature from the device.

It may be free for private use however, if you want to use it as a selling point you need to purchase a license ($750.00 US). Kind of pricey but probably worth it if it works.

Please let us know how this works for you.

Thanks,
Randal

Hi Randal, I'am glad if this could help you.

I am in doubt that a TeamViewer for Blackberry will be available in the next future and anyway the blackberry devices are "email oriented" not "web oriented". The Blackberry Storm with just 480x320 pixel makes very difficult to adapt your current FWH interface to this kind of smartphone.

The "web oriented" smartphones are going all on Android OS. There is the Apple iPhone, also supported from TeamViewer and some Mobile 7 will appairs in the next future but I'm sure that a TV version will be available for this OS.
Symbian OS will be also replaced by Mobile 7.

My customers don't need to make an intensive use of the remote connection via TV and I inform them at startup that the TV terms and conditions will apply. This solution is suitable for my market target, anycase there are also totally free VNC adaptation for Android that could be used but I didn't test them.

If you have an existing app for the Windows phone system, you should be able to adapt it easily to Win 7 Phone. Microsoft is very interested in getting apps out there and I have been asked by them several times if I will have an app ready for the Windows 7 phone. They even have programs to help you get marketing free.

Instead of discarding your previous work, you may wish to check out how to bring it current.

Marco,
I'v tried with iPad +TeamViewer to connect to my desktop.
Is not a bad idea to implement some simple dialog and connect to application software from remote. I found only a little problem: is it normal that mouse cursor is not exactly under the tip of my finger?

Yes. It's a TeamViewer feature.
This make simply to move the mouse on smartphones where the display is smaller then an iPad.
