MSVC vs. Borland xHarbour vs. Harbour
Posted: Mon Aug 29, 2011 02:14 PM

I am retooling my FWH world with the latest libraries from FWH 11.07 version. My intention is to take full advantage of the WIN2010 style, in as many places as possible in an attempt to give a new look and feel to my legacy Windows applications. Also, I would link to eventually migrate my legacy code into the MS Visual studio world and attempt to create .net applications that utilize my existing libraries and functions.

I'm soliciting opinions on which compilers and linkers are the favorites.

  1. xHarbour vs Harbour - which product and which version?
  2. BCC vs MSVC vs other? which product and which version?
  3. which linker creates best results? MSVC or BCC?

Thanks.

I'm using xHarbour (latest from SVN) and BCC 5.82.

My legacy app is built with xHarbour ( .com ) and that means Pelles C.

I am making a transition to Harbour ( Antonio's suggestion and with his assistance ) and MSVC 2010. I complicated it by moving to a 64 bit OS and so I'm having some issues still getting a build. Then I have to update to Harbour 3.0.

My goal is to eventually be more compatible with MSVC for future work.

It appears most people on the Harbour forum are not using FWH. Most people here seem to be using the old Borland compiler. There are many discussion that have taken place and you might find them interesting.

The bottom line is there are lots of way to use these tools, and no one seems to jump out as a universal favorite. People seem to get the best results when they work with what they like.
