Question about the scope of this forum
Posted: Thu Jan 01, 2026 06:28 PM

Dear Antonio,

first of all, I would like to wish you a happy and successful start to the new year.

Before posting any concrete examples, I would like to ask a short question about the intended scope of this forum.

It is clear that a lot has changed recently. AI-driven development has increased the importance of standard architectures, common tooling, and widely used integration patterns.

At the moment, the focus here seems to be mainly on HIX, while mod_harbour itself is less in the foreground. That is understandable and reflects current activity.

My question is not about judging any approach. My concern is about openness.

From personal experience, I believe Harbour benefits when different architectural ideas can be discussed openly. In the past, narrowing discussions too early sometimes led to fragmentation and incompatible paths later on.

Especially today, it may be useful to also allow discussion of Harbour-based approaches that integrate with standard web technologies — for example using PHP or other thin web layers in front of Harbour microservices.

So my question is simply:

Is this forum intended to focus exclusively on mod_harbour / HIX, or is there room to discuss other Harbour-related web architectures as well?

If the scope is meant to be narrow, that is perfectly fine. I just want to understand it clearly and respect the forum’s direction.

Best regards, Otto

Dear Otto,

Thank you very much for your kind wishes for the new year. I hope it brings you great success and happiness as well.

To answer your question: the answer is a resounding yes.

The primary goal of this forum is the advancement and modernization of Harbour, and we are fully open to any discussion, architecture, or technology that is enriching for everyone.

I completely agree with you that limiting ourselves to a single approach would be a mistake. Integration with web standards, the use of microservices, and interoperability with other languages (such as PHP, as you mentioned) are highly relevant topics today. If experience has taught us anything, it is that a diversity of ideas and the freedom to share different viewpoints is what truly strengthens the ecosystem.

While HIX and mod_harbour are currently in the spotlight due to active development, they are by no means exclusive. Any contribution that adds value, opens up new perspectives, or helps integrate Harbour into the modern world of AI and the cloud is more than welcome.

Please feel free to post your examples and start those discussions. I am certain that your experience and insight will bring great value to the community.

Warm regards,

Antonio
